CGM vs CGF: Two Corn By-Products, Two Different Jobs in the Ration

Corn gluten feed CGF 18% protein feed ingredient sample

Corn gluten meal (CGM) and corn gluten feed (CGF) come out of the same wet-milling process, but in a feed formula they are not interchangeable. One is a protein concentrate, the other is a fibre-and-energy ingredient.

What each one is

CGM is the protein fraction of the corn kernel, dried and milled. On our specification it is 60% min crude protein, and it carries the natural yellow pigment that poultry formulators value.

CGF also contains the bran and the steep-water solubles, so it carries fibre and energy alongside its 18% protein. That makes it a different kind of ingredient: less protein per tonne, but useful bulk and energy.

Where each one fits

CGM suits poultry and aquafeed, where a high protein level is needed in a small inclusion rate — and where the natural pigment is an advantage for yolk and skin colour.

CGF suits ruminant and pig feed, where fibre and energy are wanted and the ration has room for a bulkier ingredient. It is often considered where the cost per tonne, not the protein level, drives the decision.

How to choose for your own formula

  • Start from the animal and the stage: young and high-output animals need protein density; adult ruminants can use fibre and energy.
  • Compare cost per unit of protein, not cost per tonne — a cheaper ingredient with a third of the protein is not cheaper at the formula level.
  • If yolk or skin colour matters to your market, CGM does something CGF does not.
  • Check what you can actually receive and store: two ingredients with different densities and flow behaviour behave differently in a silo.

What to confirm before you order

Ask for the specification sheet and a COA sample before you commit, and make sure the COA will be issued for every batch. We ship CGM 60% min and CGF 18%, and we are happy to send both specification sheets so your nutritionist can compare them side by side.
